Dialog: Forward message (Matrix)
How to open
- Chat: Message context menu (hover “…” button or right-click) → Forward
- Teams & Channels (Matrix channel): Overflow menu (⋯) on a post or thread reply → Forward
Applies to your own and others’ text messages, as long as you can read the message.
Dialog contents
| Area | Description |
|---|---|
| Preview | Plain text of the selected message (no formatting) |
| Search | Filters the room list by name |
| Room list | All Matrix rooms from your chat list; multi-select via checkbox |
| Actions | Cancel or Forward (enabled once at least one room is selected) |
Steps
- Open the message menu in chat or channel → Forward
- Select target room(s) in the list (multiple allowed)
- Optionally use search to narrow the list
- Confirm Forward
- A short confirmation (“Message forwarded”); each target room receives a new message from you
What is forwarded?
- Message text (plain text)
- A header line with the original sender’s name, e.g. “Forwarded message from Max:”
What is not forwarded?
- Files, images, audio, or video — text body only, if any
- Formatting (bold, rich links, embedded widgets)
- Matrix forward/reply relation — recipients see a normal text message, not a dedicated “forwarded” badge as in some Matrix clients
Notes
- In chat, the current room is hidden from the target list (you cannot forward to the same conversation via this dialog).
- In Matrix channels, the same channel may appear in the list — forwarding there creates a new post with the quoted text.
- Encrypted rooms use the target room’s usual end-to-end encryption.
- To forward in Microsoft Teams chats, see MS Teams Chat (separate forward dialog).
